“Shrine or Security Zone? A Report Sparks Controversy in Lebanon”

A video broadcast by the “Al Jadeed” TV channel detailing the construction of a shrine for former Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah—who Israel assassinated on September 27, 2024—has stirred considerable controversy and strong reactions from Hezbollah’s supporters and its MPs.

Although “Al Jadeed” noted that it did not produce the video, the failure to attribute it to any journalist or media organization caused further confusion.

The relatively long report—over nine minutes—presented documents regarding the land ownership, the funds allocated for the project, and future plans to turn it into a religious site, and possibly a security zone controlling access to Rafic Hariri International Airport in Beirut.

It questioned how Hezbollah was able to secure such funding despite its inability to compensate its own community for the destruction caused by the Support War.

The report also raised questions about the role of “Al-Qard Al-Hassan” in financing the project, which appears to be developing into a shrine similar to that of Sayyida Zainab in Damascus—or perhaps a compensation for the loss of that site.
